Welcome to the Watermelon Planter tutorial. This tutorial was created using PSP 7. You will need the teardrop shape which is a part of the extra shapes on the PSP 7 CD or it can be downloaded for free from Jasc if you got your copy of PSP 7 from the web. You will also need the gradient for the leaves. You can get that here. I will be referring to the "jaggies procedure" throughout this tutorial. This is a little trick that Liz from FlyByNightGraphics taught us ... thanks so much Liz. This procedure is as follows: with the marching ants around your image go to selections-modify-contract-1; then go to selections-modify-feather-2; then invert the selection and hit the delete key about 4 or 5 times. No more jaggies!! 1. Open a new transparent image 400 X 400. Create a new layer. Select the preset shapes tool and choose ellipse. Make your background color - 676255. Draw your ellipse. With the selection tool draw a rectangle around the ellipse and then click on the ellipse. Now your ellipse should be selected. Do the jaggies procedure. > 2. Go to selections-modify-contract-20-ok. Select the flood fill tool and make your background color - B7B988. Flood fill the selection. 3. Go to selections-modify-contract-20-ok. Select the flood fill tool and make your background color - E7F0D1. Flood fill the selection. 4. Go to selections-modify-contract-20-ok. Select the flood fill tool and make your background color - B86764. Flood fill the selection. Select - none. 5. Choose the selection tool - rectangle; feather - 0. Draw a rectangle from about the middle of the ellipse (or wherever you want your watermelon to be cut) and up over the top. Right click on the top of the window and choose - cut. 6. Draw a rectangle around your watermelon and then click on it. Your watermelon should be selected. Choose the retouch tool (the hand) and choose - smudge tool; shape - round; size - 29; hardness - 0; opacity - 39; step - 25; density - 98. Use the smudge tool where the different colors meet, smudging them together. Selections - none. 7. Create a new raster layer. Set foreground to white; no background. Select paintbrush tool - round; size - 1; hardness - 0; opacity - 56; step - 25; density - 100. Draw some white lines on the red part of your watermelon for veins. 8. Choose the retouch tool - soften; round; size - 9; hardness - 0; opacity - 100; step - 25, density - 100. Use the to soften all the veins in the watermelon. 9. Choose layers - merge visible. 10. Create a new raster layer. Make the background black. 11. Select the shapes tool - teardrop. 12. Draw a teardrop on your new layer. Choose the magic wand and select this teardrop. 13. Choose effects - 3d - inner bevel with these settings: width - 4; smoothness - 25; depth - 8; ambience - -17; shininess - 56; color - white; angle - 63; intensity - 46; elevation - 48. 14. Select - none. 15. Right click and choose duplicate layer. Now you can move the duplicate seed to anywhere you want. Duplicate several more times and make more seeds. Or you can manually make new seeds on new layers if you wish. 16. After you have as many seeds as you want, make invisible all layers except the seed layers and go to layers, merge visible. 17. Make your seed layer active and go to effects - 3d - drop shadow. Apply a drop shadow with these settings - vertical - 1; horizontal - 1; opacity - 45; blur - 3.7; color - black. 18. Go to layers - merge visible. 19. Choose the lasso tool - freehand. Starting at the left of your watermelon draw a jagged line just down from the top of the watermelon and bring it up over the top of the watermelon and connect it. Right click on the top of the window and cut. Selections - none. 20. Create new raster layer. Choose the paintbrush tool with these settings - round; size - 4; hardness - 0; opacity - 100; step - 25; density - 100. 21. Draw 3 stems for your plants. Come down over the watermelon a little bit and then move the layer under the watermelon layer. 22. Layers - merge visible. 23. Create new raster layer. Make the background color - 9B809B. Choose the shapes tool and choose teardrop. Draw a wide teardrop on your new layer. Choose the magic wand and select the teardrop. 24. Choose selections - modify - contract - 20. Go to selections - promote to layer. Now go back to the previous layer where your flower is and apply effects - 3d - inner bevel with the following settings - width - 4; smoothness - 52; depth - 3; ambience - -17; shininess - 44; color - white; angle - 63; intensity - 46; elevation - 38. 25. Go to your promoted layer and make it active and apply the same bevel settings except make the width 2. 26. Choose the retouch tool - soften and soften up the edges of the promoted inner flower. 27. Choose the paintbrush - size 2. Make your foreground color - white and make some dots in the center of the inner flower. 28. Make all layers except the flower layers invisible and then layers - merge visible. Duplicate this layer 2 times and move the flowers onto the other stems. 29. Create a new raster layer. Choose the preset shapes tool and choose teardrop. Make your background - white. Draw a teardrop on your new layer for your leaf. Select this teardrop and flood fill the teardrop with the leaf gradient. 30. Choose effects - 3d - inner bevel with these settings; width - 4; smoothness - 54; depth - 20; ambience - -37; shininess - 0; color - white; angle - 4; intensity - 50; elevation - 59. 31. Make invisible all the layers except the leaf layer and do the jaggies procedure. Open other layers. 32. Duplicate the leaf layer and move around to the other stems. Make as many leaves as you desire. Rotate them as you wish. Or you can make each leaf individually if you prefer. 33. When you have your leaves as you want them merge the layers and save as a tube or fill the background with a color or pattern. Thank you for trying this tutorial. I hope it was enjoyable for you.
